Detailed Requirements

Age Requirement

For 2026–27, use 1 August 2026 as the prospectus reference date: male General 25, OBC-NCL 28, SC/ST 30; female General 27, OBC-NCL 30, SC/ST 32. Verify any later admission notice.

Medical and Eyesight Checkpoint

A DGS-approved medical examiner must certify fitness under the Merchant Shipping medical rules. IMU publishes unaided deck eyesight of 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other, with normal colour vision; the current official prospectus and examiner’s certificate control.

Entrance Examination

A valid rank in the applicable IMU-CET is required under the 2026 admission process. University counselling and company recruitment are separate selection systems.

Sponsorship Checkpoint

Status: Preferred / company-dependent. Early company selection can clarify the future deck-cadet pathway, but it should never be advertised as guaranteed. The sponsor may condition any offer on degree performance, conduct, medical fitness, documents and berth availability.

Before You Pay:

Sponsorship should be obtained only through a verifiable shipping company or its officially authorised selection channel. Candidates must verify the company, institute, approval status and sponsorship terms before making any payment.

Is IMU-CET required?
Yes, under the applicable 2026 IMU admission mechanism for this seagoing UG programme.
Can spectacles be used for deck eyesight eligibility?
Do not self-assess. Deck-route requirements include unaided vision and colour vision; obtain an early DGS-approved medical examination.
Does the degree make me a Second Officer?
No. Approved sea service, training records, post-sea education and CoC assessments remain mandatory.
Can I work ashore later?
Yes, experience plus role-specific qualifications can support shore opportunities, but no shore role is guaranteed by the degree.
