Official Eligibility Snapshot

Eligibility Layer What Applies
IMU 10+2 route Recognised 10+2 with PCM average of at least 60% and English at least 50% in 10th or 12th.
IMU graduate routes The 2026 prospectus also lists specified B.Sc. and B.E./B.Tech routes with defined subject/marks conditions. Check the exact degree wording before application.
Relaxation The IMU prospectus provides the notified SC/ST relaxation in PCM, not in English, plus a relaxation for eligible island Scheduled Tribe candidates.
Institute layer Board recognition, original documents, residential rules, deadlines and counselling requirements apply.
Sponsor layer A company may require higher PCM/English marks, psychometric testing, interviews or a stricter standard. These are company criteria—not universal DGS rules.

Detailed Requirements

Age Requirement

For the 2026 academic session, the IMU prospectus uses 1 August 2026 as the age-reference date. Published limits for seagoing UG/DNS routes are male General 25, OBC-NCL 28, SC/ST 30; female General 27, OBC-NCL 30, SC/ST 32. Recheck the selected batch notice.

Medical and Eyesight Checkpoint

Medical fitness must satisfy the Merchant Shipping medical rules in force. Obtain the certificate from a DGS-approved medical examiner. Deck-route eyesight and normal colour-vision standards are stricter; use the 2026 prospectus and medical examiner’s decision, not a sponsor’s social media post.

Entrance Examination

IMU-CET applies for the 2026 DNS admission route. A sponsor may also conduct its own aptitude, PCM/English, psychometric and interview stages. Passing IMU-CET does not itself provide sponsorship.

Sponsorship Checkpoint

Status: Required for affiliated-institute sponsored seats / otherwise batch-specific. Apply only against a named, verifiable company scheme or an officially authorised selection channel. The letter should state the institute, batch, selection conditions, medical requirements, training support, cancellation terms and whether the berth remains subject to performance and vacancy.

Before You Pay:

Sponsorship should be obtained only through a verifiable shipping company or its officially authorised selection channel. Candidates must verify the company, institute, approval status and sponsorship terms before making any payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sponsorship compulsory for DNS?
For DNS admissions at IMU-affiliated institutes, current sponsored-seat circulars make company confirmation central. Always check the exact batch circular and institute route.
Is IMU-CET enough for admission?
No. Eligibility, rank/counselling, medical fitness, documents, institute requirements and sponsorship where applicable are separate.
Does DNS make me an officer after one year?
No. The pre-sea diploma is followed by prescribed shipboard training, IMU components, post-sea preparation, examinations and CoC stages.
Does sponsorship guarantee permanent employment?
No. It may support structured training under written conditions; permanent employment exists only where the contract expressly provides it.
What if I fail the deck eyesight standard?
Do not pay first. Consult a DGS-approved medical examiner and compare only routes for which you are medically eligible.
