Electrical, electronics, communication, instrumentation or control candidates who enjoy shipboard power generation, automation, high-voltage awareness, diagnostics and disciplined safety procedures.
| Quick Fact | Verified Route Details |
|---|---|
| Department | Electrical / electro-technical officer route |
| Duration | Four months; the course guideline describes 17 weeks |
| Direct entry | Specified electrical/electronics diploma or degree route |
| New 2026 pathway | Eligible ETR CoP holders may progress after the prescribed prior sea service |
| Entrance | No universal IMU-CET requirement identified; institute/company tests apply |
| Sponsorship | Preferred/company-dependent; critical for planning approved onboard training |
| Training provider | This course must be completed through a DG Shipping-approved Maritime Training Institute. |
| Eligibility Layer | What Applies |
|---|---|
| Direct diploma route | Three-year recognized diploma with at least 60% in Electrical, Electronics, Electrical & Electronics, Electronics & Telecommunication/Communication, Electronics & Instrumentation or equivalent. |
| Direct degree route | Four-year recognized degree, including lateral entry, with at least 50% in the specified electrical/electronics streams. |
| School subjects | 10+2 Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects; English at least 50% in 10th or 12th under the cited corrigendum. |
| ETR progression | DGS Circular 25 of 2026 creates separate Category A and B routes based on ETR CoP, diploma/degree status and prescribed prior sea service/TAR Book. |
| Company layer | Sponsors may require higher technical marks, no backlogs, technical tests and scheme-specific experience. |
For fresh direct entry, [Verification required before publication] against the latest DGS consolidated course-entry record and batch date. DGS Circular 25 of 2026 specifically removes the age limitation for eligible ETR CoP holders joining ETO after completing the prescribed sea service; do not extend that statement to every fresh applicant.
DGS-approved medical fitness is required, including normal colour vision and the applicable electrical/engine-department eyesight and hearing standards. Company high-voltage or role-specific screening may be additional.
IMU-CET is not a universal ETO entry requirement. Expect academic screening, electrical/electronics tests, psychometric assessment, interview and medical stages from the MTI or sponsor.
Status: Preferred / company-dependent. The onboard training and TAR Book route must be understood in writing. A sponsor’s support remains subject to eligibility, course performance, documentation, medical fitness and berth availability.
Sponsorship should be obtained only through a verifiable shipping company or its officially authorised selection channel. Candidates must verify the company, institute, approval status and sponsorship terms before making any payment.
Choose direct-entry or ETR-progression pathway.
Check degree/diploma recognition, marks, English and prior service.
Clear company/MTI tests, interview and medical.
Complete the approved four-month ETO course.
Complete approved onboard training, sea service and TAR Book.
Meet current DGS assessment, exams and ETO CoC requirements.
Electrical machines and distribution; electronics; automation and control; instrumentation; alarms and monitoring; high-voltage safety; maintenance and fault diagnosis; ship systems; emergency procedures; maritime regulations and resource management.
Safe isolation, testing and measurement, fault-finding, reading diagrams, maintaining generators/motors/control systems, automation awareness, documentation and emergency response.
Trainee ETO / electro-technical trainee under an approved scheme. The exact title depends on the sponsor and regulatory pathway.
Eligible entry → approved ETO course → applicable onboard training/sea service and TAR Book → DGS written/oral assessment → ETO CoC.
Trainee ETO → Electro-Technical Officer → senior electrical/electro-technical responsibilities where the company structure provides them (promotion titles are company-specific).
Marine electrical service, automation/instrumentation, commissioning, shipyard support, technical service, offshore maintenance, equipment manufacturers and superintendent/support roles after relevant experience.
| Decision Point | What Candidates Should Understand |
|---|---|
| Advantages | Specialised route aligned with increasingly automated ships, electrical propulsion and control systems; strong technical transferability ashore. |
| Challenges | High safety responsibility, continuous technology learning, company-specific senior titles, mandatory onboard competence and no automatic berth after course completion. |
| Not Guaranteed | Course admission, sponsor selection, a berth (seat), ETO CoC, permanent employment, salary or a fixed promotion title. |
Note: Verify on the DGS RPS Agencies list. RPSL authorisation concerns recruitment and placement; it is not approval to conduct a maritime training course.
Application fields include: full name; date of birth; city/state; mobile/email; qualification and marks; intended batch; passport status; medical status; secure document upload; privacy consent; parent/guardian consent if the applicant is below 18.
Electrical/electronics candidates not yet meeting direct-entry marks can explore recognized qualification improvement. Existing GP Rating/ETR candidates should use only the new 2026 progression route applicable to their service and records.
Verify if your engineering qualification or electrical diploma matches DGS and company eligibility standards, and get sponsor-ready guidance.
