Official Eligibility Snapshot

Eligibility Layer What Applies
Core DGS degree streams Full-time B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering streams where ‘Mechanical’ is the core/first discipline; Naval Architecture streams where ‘Naval Architecture’ is first; and accepted Marine Engineering degrees under later addenda.
Recognition The degree/institute must satisfy the AICTE/IIT/university-college recognition conditions in the applicable DGS circular.
Marks and English The consolidated DGS entry record is generally applied as at least 50% in the qualifying degree and 50% English in 10th, 12th or degree. Verify the latest MTI admission upload before publication.
Institute layer Institutes may screen backlogs, year gaps, degree nomenclature and documents.
Company layer Sponsors may require higher degree marks, no active backlogs, preferred age, tests and stricter medical fitness.

Detailed Requirements

Age Requirement

Confirm the current DGS maximum age and the exact batch-start reference date in the latest course-entry circular/approved MTI notice. Do not present a company’s preferred age as the DGS rule.

Medical and Eyesight Checkpoint

Candidates must pass medical fitness under the Merchant Shipping medical rules through a DGS-approved examiner, including normal colour vision and the applicable engine-department eyesight standard.

Entrance Examination

IMU-CET is not presented as a universal GME entry requirement. The MTI and sponsor may conduct aptitude, engineering, psychometric, interview and medical stages.

Sponsorship Checkpoint

Status: Preferred / company-dependent. Because shipboard training is essential after GME, candidates should understand the berth-support route before paying. Sponsorship may support training subject to performance, documentation, medical fitness and vacancies; it does not automatically mean permanent employment.

Before You Pay:

Sponsorship should be obtained only through a verifiable shipping company or its officially authorised selection channel. Candidates must verify the company, institute, approval status and sponsorship terms before making any payment.

What You Will Learn & Career Progression

What Candidates Study

Marine diesel engines and auxiliaries; thermodynamics; boilers and steam; electrical and control systems; naval architecture and stability; workshop practice; marine safety; pollution prevention; maritime law and engine-room resource management.

Practical Skills Developed

Machinery familiarisation, workshop practice, fault-finding, safe maintenance, engine-room procedures, technical reporting, teamwork and emergency response.

First Expected Onboard Role

Trainee Marine Engineer. Any promised joining date must be supported by written, verifiable company terms and remains subject to conditions.

Sea-service and Certification Pathway

Approved GME → structured shipboard training/sea service → prescribed records and post-sea requirements → MEO Class IV examination and CoC.

Rank-progression Roadmap

Trainee Marine Engineer → Fourth/Third Engineer → Second Engineer → Chief Engineer (conditional on higher CoCs and appointments).

Possible Shore-based Careers

Technical operations, ship repair, equipment service, superintendent track, procurement, survey/class support, safety, training and marine consultancy after suitable sea experience/qualifications.

Advantages, Challenges & Realities

Decision Point What Candidates Should Understand
Advantages Focused conversion route for eligible graduates; builds directly on mechanical/naval engineering; shorter pre-sea academic phase than a fresh four-year degree.
Challenges Degree-title eligibility can be misunderstood, company selection is competitive, onboard training is essential and course completion alone does not confer a CoC.
Not Guaranteed Degree acceptance, admission, sponsorship, shipboard berth, MEO Class IV success, employment, salary or promotion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every engineering graduate join GME?
No. DGS circulars define eligible degree streams and naming conditions. Civil, computer and unrelated degrees should not be presented as eligible.
Is IMU-CET required?
No universal IMU-CET requirement was identified for GME; institute and company selection rules still apply.
Is sponsorship compulsory?
It is company-dependent, but understanding the approved onboard-training route before admission is strongly advisable.
Does one-year GME make me a Fourth Engineer?
No. Approved sea service, records, post-sea requirements and the MEO Class IV CoC process remain.
Why is my degree title checked word by word?
DGS eligibility distinguishes core Mechanical and Naval Architecture streams. A similar-sounding degree may not automatically qualify.
