Sponsorship is a written company-linked selection or training-support arrangement. Depending on the programme, it may identify an approved institute and may support structured onboard training after successful course completion, subject to performance, medical fitness, documentation, conduct and vacancies.
Note: Verify on the DGS RPS Agencies list. RPSL authorisation concerns recruitment and placement; it is not approval to conduct a maritime training course.
| Do Not Confuse | Real Difference |
|---|---|
| Sponsorship vs admission | Admission confirms a place in a course. Sponsorship is a separate company-linked selection/support arrangement. |
| Sponsorship vs permanent employment | Sponsorship does not automatically create a permanent job. Employment exists only where written contract terms say so. |
| Sponsorship vs guaranteed ship | Berth support may still depend on successful training, certificates, medical fitness, documents, conduct and vessel vacancies. |
| Course Name | Practical Sponsorship Status |
|---|---|
| DNS | Required/central for many affiliated-institute sponsored-seat admissions; check the current IMU batch circular. |
| B.Sc. Nautical Science | Preferred/company-dependent; not universally required for admission. |
| B.Tech Marine Engineering | Preferred/company-dependent; helps clarify later shipboard training. |
| GME / ETO / DME | Preferred and commercially important because structured onboard training is essential; scheme-specific. |
| GP Rating / CCMC | Company-dependent rather than a universal DGS course-admission condition. |
The subjects depend on the course. DNS/deck schemes may assess PCM, English, aptitude and maritime awareness. Engineering schemes may assess mathematics, thermodynamics, mechanics, electrical fundamentals or branch knowledge. Always use the company’s current notice.
This may assess attention, judgement, consistency, risk awareness, teamwork and behavioural fit. Candidates should answer honestly; coaching should build familiarity, not manipulate personality results.
Complete the official sea-service medical through a DGS-approved examiner and disclose medical history honestly. A company may require an additional medical. No counsellor can overrule the authorised medical decision.
For 2026 DNS, B.Sc. Nautical Science and B.Tech Marine Engineering routes, follow the applicable IMU-CET and counselling mechanism. Company selection does not replace IMU admission compliance.
Read academic-performance, attendance, conduct, medical, documentation, examination, joining-readiness, cancellation, refund and vacancy clauses. Ask which party provides training support and whether any offer expires.
Publish an itemised written fee table showing who receives each amount, what service it covers, taxes, payment schedule, cancellation/refund conditions and whether any third party is involved. Never describe an unreceipted payment as a sponsorship fee.
| Warning Sign | Safe Response Required |
|---|---|
| Guaranteed job/ship/salary | Request written legal terms; do not rely on a sales promise. |
| Personal bank or cash payment | Pay only the verified legal entity against an invoice/receipt. |
| Unverifiable company or RPSL | Check official records and stop until identity is confirmed. |
| Institute named without course approval | Verify both institute and specific course. |
| Pressure to pay immediately | Pause and complete the Before You Pay checklist. |
| Altered letter/logo or free email address | Confirm directly through the official company domain/contact. |
Provide genuine documents, disclose medical history, meet deadlines, prepare honestly, follow institute/company conduct rules, protect personal data and read all written terms before paying.
