For 2026–27 seagoing UG admission, the prospectus reference date is 1 August 2026: male General 25, OBC-NCL 28, SC/ST 30; female General 27, OBC-NCL 30, SC/ST 32. Verify lateral-entry rules separately.
Candidates need DGS-approved medical fitness under the Merchant Shipping medical rules. IMU’s engine-route page publishes normal colour vision and distance vision of 6/12 in each eye, or 6/9 in the better eye and 6/18 in the other, unaided. The current official prospectus and examiner control.
IMU-CET applies to the standard 2026 entry route. Lateral entry and institute/company tests may follow separate current notices.
Status: Preferred / company-dependent. A company selection may support a future trainee-engineer berth, subject to degree performance, conduct, medical fitness, documents and vacancies. It should not be presented as a guaranteed permanent appointment.
Sponsorship should be obtained only through a verifiable shipping company or its officially authorised selection channel. Candidates must verify the company, institute, approval status and sponsorship terms before making any payment.
Check PCM, English, age and engine medical standards.
Clear IMU-CET and counselling/admission.
Complete four years of approved theory, laboratory, workshop.
Join approved shipboard training as a trainee engineer.
Complete sea service, courses and MEO Class IV CoC.
Trainee Engineer → Fourth/Third → Second → Chief Engineer.

| Decision Point | What Candidates Should Understand |
|---|---|
| Advantages | Full engineering degree, strong technical base, simulator/workshop exposure and broad long-term sea/shore options. |
| Challenges | Four-year residential commitment, physically and technically demanding training, hot/noisy machinery spaces, watchkeeping and no automatic berth or CoC. |
| Not Guaranteed | A ship, sponsorship, CoC, engineer rank, permanent employment, salary or promotion. |
Note: Verify on the DGS RPS Agencies list. RPSL authorisation concerns recruitment and placement; it is not approval to conduct a maritime training course.
Application fields include: full name; date of birth; city/state; mobile/email; qualification and marks; intended batch; passport status; medical status; secure document upload; privacy consent; parent/guardian consent if the applicant is below 18.
